Quantitative Methods Reflective Journal

 I am Narmatha currently studying my first year degree in Finance and Economics. One of the subjects that is compulsory for me to take is Quantitative Methods for Business. My lecturer as well as my tutor for this subject is Ms.Jayasutha. Recently we had been given an assignment to carry out which was worth 25%. This assignment was supposed to be carried out in a group.

The main outcome of this assignment was to answer the question; what actually determines the house prices? My group mates and me decided to chose Bukit Raja as our place to carry out our research on. Bukit Raja proved to be a very strategic place because of the price variation. This got me thinking of all the things, which I should look on when looking for a house. There were so many categories we had to look on just to make sure the data we collected were all the same. I am pretty sure the next time I have to look up for information on houses I would know pretty well how to:

a.     Use the property websites

b.     How to search for the houses I am interested in

Working in a group also made me realize a lot of things. It made me feel how important another person’s work is, because it affects me. This made me realize that the other members in my group would have probably had felt the same way. It made me want to do my work correctly so that I do not get underestimated by them or feel inferior to them. Enough said I had really good team members and they did their part (although I’m not sure if ours was right or wrong).

Other than that when looking through the prices of the house it made me realize how expensive these houses were. To be honest I really wanted to live a very luxurious life, but looking at the price of the houses it made me think twice about the chance I would get to live in a luxurious house. The prices in Klang is just really high, I had to look up on other places as well. Some places depending on their locations are cheaper in price. So, I think that the location of the house plays a very important role in determining the price, not only the size of the house.

Through this assignment I have really learnt a lot. I learnt to use excel(which I think is really complicated at times), how to apply what we learn( example; correlation) in our daily lives and how to work in a team . Sometimes applying what we learned helps me understand much better especially with subjects like this (similar to Math’s). Maybe there should be more assignments with the applying concepts of QM but not in such a high level of difficulty.
