Business Communication - Reflective Journal

Business Communication is a module, which we are, suppose to take in our first year at Taylor’s Business School. This assignment is on writing out a business report on a business premise. Our group consists of 4 of us. We had chosen to do our report on Peppercorn Café which was located at ss15, Subang Jaya.

My expectations before starting this assignment was that it was going to be a difficult task to complete. This was because there were a lot of requirements to be reached in order to get good marks. When carrying out the assignment I was proven right as we had some problem and dissatisfaction amongst group members. Furthermore, we had problems with finding references. However, we did work hard to fulfill the requirements and satisfy our expectations.

There were some things that went well when carrying out this assignment. For example, our interview was great as the owner of the café cooperated and helped us in many ways. She was friendly and provided us with many useful information. Other than that, we managed to finish this on time. This was a great pleasure to us, as we did not submit it late although we faced a few problems.

The few problems, which we faced, are, misunderstandings amongst group members and poor time management. We had misunderstanding amongst our group, as some of us were not happy with out task division. I also felt that some of my group members were not very cooperative and their work was very poorly done. There were many careless mistakes and they had not even bothered to correct it. I would say that although we managed to finish our assignment on time, we had to rush to finish it. We were doing this till the very last minute mainly, because WE had to edit the grammatical errors and find more referencing.

If I were to do something differently, I would have chosen to start my work early.
I would have urged and pushed my other group members to start of early as well.
I would also have confronted the uncooperative group members, because this is a group work and it affects all of our marks. However, from this assignment I managed to learn a lot. For example I learned how to conduct an interview and extract important information. I also learned to write a proper business report. Other than that, I think I can say I learned to improve my grammar and vocabulary as well.

Introduction to Management - Reflective Journal

Introduction to Management is one of the five subjects that I have to take for my degree course this semester. The lecturer for this module is Ms.Natasya Saat and my tutor for this module is Ms. Ang Yen Yen. During my first day of lecture I was actually pretty clueless of what to expect from this module, but as the days passed, I think it started to become clearer to me. This course was basically teaching how to become a better manager. The contents of this subject are something similar to what I had taken when doing my Canadian Pre-U last year. (Not the whole thing, just a few here and there).

As I started attending more lectures and classes it started to become much clearer to me of what I wanted to learn. I wanted to learn to become a better leader and even if I can’t start of my working career as a leader, even as an employee I would want to know the basics of how a management work. What I really wanted to learn was how to become a good leader and what are the different types of leader in today’s world. It made me more enthusiastic about this module as I would have had the chance to relate and learn the type of management skills some of the renowned leaders are using. Moreover I had expected to learn a bit more on leadership and also motivational skills. I also wanted to learn more about myself in this way as I would know in what kind of conditions I preferred working what kind of people I would like to work with.

After 12 weeks my feelings towards the module might have changed. I feel that this module is to dry and has a lot to memorize. Maybe because this mostly consists of so many theories, principles and experiments that make me feel this subject is to dry. Personally I feel that there is no one specific theory, which can be applied to mold an organization. People change constantly and with that it should have been clear that not one specific theory could be applied. However though if they think if combining a few principles and this entire subject can be said to be pretty important in life. Working life can be pretty hectic and stressful thus the things we learn from management can give us a head start on what to expect and how to deal with it.

Accounting Reflective Journal - 2

The results which I obtained during for my mid semester test was pretty satisfying. I was pretty exited seeing my results and was glad it was an online test, where we could do it anytime within that period of time and also was given a second attempt. Did the tutorials help? I think they did slightly. I did not do all my tutorials; I have only done a few to be honest. I think that the tutorials would have been really helpful during the test.

Quantitative Methods Reflective Journal

I am Narmatha currently studying my first year degree in Finance and Economics. One of the subjects that is compulsory for me to take is Quantitative Methods for Business. My lecturer as well as my tutor for this subject is Ms.Jayasutha. Recently we had been given an assignment to carry out which was worth 25%. This assignment was supposed to be carried out in a group.

The main outcome of this assignment was to answer the question; what actually determines the house prices? My group mates and me decided to chose Bukit Raja as our place to carry out our research on. Bukit Raja proved to be a very strategic place because of the price variation. This got me thinking of all the things, which I should look on when looking for a house. There were so many categories we had to look on just to make sure the data we collected were all the same. I am pretty sure the next time I have to look up for information on houses I would know pretty well how to:
a.     Use the property websites
b.     How to search for the houses I am interested in
Working in a group also made me realize a lot of things. It made me feel how important another person’s work is, because it affects me. This made me realize that the other members in my group would have probably had felt the same way. It made me want to do my work correctly so that I do not get underestimated by them or feel inferior to them. Enough said I had really good team members and they did their part (although I’m not sure if ours was right or wrong).
Other than that when looking through the prices of the house it made me realize how expensive these houses were. To be honest I really wanted to live a very luxurious life, but looking at the price of the houses it made me think twice about the chance I would get to live in a luxurious house. The prices in Klang is just really high, I had to look up on other places as well. Some places depending on their locations are cheaper in price. So, I think that the location of the house plays a very important role in determining the price, not only the size of the house.
Through this assignment I have really learnt a lot. I learnt to use excel(which I think is really complicated at times), how to apply what we learn( example; correlation) in our daily lives and how to work in a team . Sometimes applying what we learned helps me understand much better especially with subjects like this (similar to Math’s). Maybe there should be more assignments with the applying concepts of QM but not in such a high level of difficulty.

Microeconomics reflective journal

I am currently studying my first year degree at Taylors Lakeside for Finance and Economics. One of the subjects which I am taking is Microeconomics. My
lecturer for this subject is Ms. Marina and my tutor is Mr. Chung Tin Fah. I enjoy my lectures and classes as well. I feel my teachers make microeconomics more interesting. Personally I enjoyed learning more about macroeconomics when doing my Canadian Pre-U, this time however microeconomics was really fun and interesting.

During lectures, Ms.Marina would give a lot of notes and there would be a lot of explanation. She would always give so much of explanations and real world examples that it makes me not just memorize the concepts or principles, but to see how these principles have been applied. This would make everything seem like it’s making more sense to me. I am usually a very restless person and have a very short attention span, however though Ms.Marina’s lecture is the only lecture, which I wouldn’t feel like leaving half way or lost. This is because if I get distracted even a little bit the chances of me following the whole lecture is very slim and I am not the kind of person who would watch Rewind.

Then, there is Mr.Chung Tin Fah my tutor. Usually by the time its his class I would have been exhausted and tired cause his would be the final class of the day. Yet he still manages to make fun in class. Mr.Chung he is generally a nice teacher he shows the initiative that he wants to help his students, which I think is great. At times he makes a lot of jokes and makes class so much more fun. I don’t think we make much friends in our tutorial classes as we stick to the people we only know, yet the initiative is definitely taken.

I feel that sometimes we should have more class interaction activity other then just doing tutorials. Like showing videos, which are related to the topic. The Khan academy has a lot of these videos, which I find are more interesting and easier to understand at times, so maybe the tutors can play this in class when they are trying to summarize what has been thought in the lecture.

Basically I feel that economics is really fun and interesting. Yes it does get really complicating with all the graphs and technical terms, but its all-real life principle and what we go through in our daily life.
